This is definitely a bad film. Straight rotten tomatoes.
I've never been a big fan of Will Smith.. I think his acting isn't genuine, but obviously some people do otherwise he wouldn't have a career. But as with many things in this life, it ain't fair, and idiots truly do run the show.
The HG Wells War of the Worlds is actually a reknown science-fiction book. The movie is all apocalyptic and very flash with the special fx of the invaders. I was expecting more after having read the book.
On the subject of H.G. Wells, his book, The Shape of Things to Come is a very fascinating work, probably my favorite of his writings. Particularly of interest is his notion of the Air Dollar. It was a contract for transport of cargo, air cargo having become the dominate industry in an age when the entire earth was united into the same political unit (as in, the entire world was controlled by a single authority).
An ever better reason to be a fan of H.G. Wells is because he lived in the 1800s. His thinking was very forward considering the state of technologies in his day, and at this point, his writings are also no longer encumbered by copyright which makes reproducing his stories in a legitimate fashion, trivial. If you try an internet search for "The Shape of Things to Come" you'll be able to read his book online.
Enjoy!
